FOLIAGE WEAVING CONTEST

The P.G. Department of Commerce of  St. Thomas College, Bhilai celebrated Kisan Diwas by organising a Foliage Weaving Contest in collaboration with Bhilai Mahila Mahavidyalaya. The contest was centred around the theme of green marketing by farmers. It witnessed vibrant participation from the students whose artistic creations captivated spectators and judges alike.

The prize distribution ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. M. G. Roymon, Principal; Dr. Debjani Mukherjee, Dean of Academics, Dr. Chanda Verma and Dr. Sapna Sharma, Head of P.G. Department of Commerce.

Fr. Dr. P.S. Varghese appreciated the initiative of P.G. Department of Commerce and accentuated the fact that leaf weaving is a traditional art form with a history spanning centuries in India. It reflects the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Indian populace and serves as a cherished element of the nation’s cultural heritage. Dr. M. G. Roymon remarked that leaf weaving transcends mere craft; it embodies a lifestyle for numerous Indian communities. He emphasised that this skill is inherited through generations, with each artisan contributing his distinctive flair and creativity to the craft.

Dr. Debjani Mukherjee pointed out that these distinctive, eco-friendly creations infuse rustic charm into any space, fostering a connection to nature and encouraging sustainable living practices. Dr. Sapna Sharma highlighted that the experience allowed students to create their small keepsakes, thereby introducing them to a traditional craft that exemplifies the creativity of farmers and artisans.

The judges and guests commended the innovative spirit of the emerging artists, who successfully transformed traditional crafts into modern designs, revitalising them with renewed vigour.
