Guest Lecture : Probiotic Foods and Nutrition

The P.G. Department of Microbiology & Biotechnology of St. Thomas College, Bhilai organized a highly insightful guest lecture on the topic “Probiotic Foods and Nutrition” on September 8, 2025, featuring eminent nutrition expert Dr. Paromita Dasgupta, Chief Dietician & Nutritionist, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital & Research Centre, Sector-9, Bhilai, as the guest speaker. The session was attended by students and faculty members from various departments, all eager to gain practical insights into the importance of probiotic food and nutrition in daily life.

Dr. Dasgupta, known for her extensive work in the field of dietary science and adolescent health, focused her lecture on the nutritional needs of adolescents and the growing health risks posed by fast food consumption. The lecture was devoted to probiotic foods and their role in maintaining gut health and overall well-being. Dr. Paromita broke down complex concepts into easy-to-understand points, making the session both informative and engaging. She also debunked common myths and misconceptions about diet and nutrition, encouraging students to approach food choices with scientific understanding rather than following trends or misinformation. She enlightened the students with superior and incomparable qualities of probiotic foods like buttermilk.

The program was a step in the direction to conscientize students to shun cold drinks and switch to healthy and wholesome drink-BUTTERMILk as part of buttermilk campaign. The program was conducted by Ms. Akansha Singh, Faculty, Department of Microbiology & Biotechnology.

The session at the end allowed students to clarify their doubts, making the lecture both participative and enriching. The event was appreciated by Principal, Dr Shiny Mendonce, who in her address stressed students to follow healthy food habits as life style diseases are very common these days. The program was also graced by Dr. Debjani Mukherjee, Dean (Academics). The program was supported and motivated by Administrator, Fr. (Dr) P S Varghese.
