National Webinar on ‘Entrepreneurship: the need of 21st Century’

“Think Big, Start small and Grow gradually”

Entrepreneurship Development Cell of St. Thomas College, Bhilai organized a National webinar on the topic “Entrepreneurship – The need of 21st century” on 8th May. Prof. Dr. Rajkumar Singh and Mr. MukeshPorwal were the keynote speakers of the event. Prof. Dr. Rajkumar Singh is the Dean R&D and HOD Commerce, School of Management Sciences, Varanasi, U.P. and Mr. MukeshPorwal is an Entrepreneur and the Director of a Home Care Product Manufacturing Company in Bhilai.

The event was organized by Dr. Shubha Diwan,Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biotechnology, Convener of the program assisted by Co-Convener Dr. Sunita Kshatriya, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Commerce, under the guidance of Dr. M.G.Roymon, Principal of St. Thomas College and Dr. Vinita Thomas, Dean Academics. His Grace Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius, Manager Bishop, Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese Administrator appreciated the whole efforts.

The first speaker, Dr. Singh laid great emphasis on pursuing ideas and working hard. He said, “Think big, but start small and grow gradually.” He explained what cost benefit analysis in start ups is and what ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ thoughts in business are. He also talked about managing one’s business through all the risks, uncertainties and fluctuations in market and that a businessman should always be aware of the GOI’s schemes. After his speech, he cleared the queries of the students.

The second and final speaker of the event, Mr. Porwal focused his discourse on the importance of practical knowledge in entrepreneurship. He shared his personal experience of how he had started working in his father’s establishment as a student to gain work experience, and how he had started his own company after his mother’s name ‘Swarna’. He also talked about his father’s struggles and hardwork and how he gave him a lot of work related knowledge.  He also said that one should never compromise the quality of their products. Dr. Rincey B. Abraham from Dept. of Commerce and Dr. Aparna Ghosh from Dept. of Economics technically assisted for the smooth conduct of the program.  The event was wrapped up with a vote of thanks delivered by co-convener of program Dr. Sunita Kshatriya from Dept. of Commerce.

The P.G. Department of Chemistry, St. Thomas College organized a 15 Days Certificate Programme on Analysis of Water Quality in collaboration with APSGMNS, Govt. P.G. College Kawardha. The Chief Guest of the occasion was Dr. R.P. Dewangan Deputy General Manager, Town Service Department, B.S.P. The Key note Speaker of the 15 Days Certificate Programme was Dr. Rajni kant Sharma Scientist B, Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Govt. of India, Nagpur.  Chief Patron H.G. Joseph Mar. Dionysius (Manager, Bishop), Patron Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese (Administrator), Dr. M.G. Roymon (Principal), Dr. Vinita Thomas, (Dean Academics), Dr. James Mathew, Head, Department of Chemistry (Convener), Dr. Chanda Verma, (Course Co-ordinator), Dr. Deepti Jangde, Head, (P.G. Deptt. of Chemistry, Kawardha), Dr. Richa Mishra, Head, (Deptt. Of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Kawardha) were present in the 15 Days Certificate Programme. Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon welcomed the Guests and the Participants. Dr. James Mathew (Convener) briefed the gathering about the objectives of the Certificate Programme. Rev. Father Dr. Joshi Varghese in his address emphasized on conducting such certificate course to understand the various water parameters and the need to follow 4 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. Dr. Chanda Verma (Course Coordinator) informed the participants about the schedule and Resource person of the 15 Days Certificate Programme. She also emphasized the students to be at home and to take full benefit out of this and come out with their interesting area of Career option. Dr. R. P. Dewangan, Chief Guest of the inaugural session explained the severity of Ground water pollution and stressed for water harvesting in every building. He explained the various model of Water Harvesting Techniques. The keynote speaker Dr. Rajnikant Sharma explained in detail the various Career Opportunities related to Water Board. He talked about the various chemical aspect of Water needed for Analysis of water Quality. Discussion Session was conducted by Dr. Dipti Jangde. The discussion was very live and questions were answered by the Resource Persons. At the conclusion of the talk, there was a healthy interactive session between the speaker and the participants which came out to fruitful results. At the outset, Patron Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese (Administrator) and Dr. M.G. Roymon (Principal) appreciated the department for organizing such Certificate Program on relevant topic. CERTIFICATE PROGRAM COMMENCES IN ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT

A certificate program on “Inland Aquaculture” has been started in the P.G. department of Zoology of St. Thomas College , Bhilai. The program is of 30 hours duration and lasts from 5th to 15th of June,2021. The modules include topics like sustainable aquaculture,major aquaculture system and practices, monoculture, polyculture, pearl culture, Mussel culture, Socio-economic evaluation of Aquaculture Technologies, etc.

Prof. Dr. Madhusoodhana Kurup, Former and Founder Vice Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Chairman, advisory committee, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture,Ministry of Commerce and Industry, was the key note speaker on the inaugural day of the program. The Principal of the College, Dr.M G Roymon welcomed the guests, Dr. Jayasree Balasubramanan,Convener of the program and Head of Department of Zoology briefed the topics and theme of the certificate program and introduced the resource persons. Dr. Joyamma John, Assistant Professor and Organizing Secretory of the program proposed the vote of thanks.

Webinar on Artificial Intelligence

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St. Thomas College and ICFAI Business School organized jointly one day webinar on the topic Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The Keynote speaker of this webinar was Professor Raghavendra Rao from ICFAI Business School, Bangalore. In the beginning Mr. Sanjay Ashatkar from ICFAI Business School, Bangalore welcomed all the guests and participants and gave a brief introduction about ICFAI group of schools and the Keynote speaker Professor Raghavendra Rao. Principal of College Dr. M. G. Roymon appreciated the program and said that for last two years when the entire world is facing the pandemic covid-19 and maximum work is going on through computers and by online medium then in this time the importance of artificial intelligence has been increased drastically. This method will be very helpful for youth in near future. The Keynote speaker Professor Raghavendra Rao elaborated the concept of artificial intelligence and said that in the present era of mechanization so many innovations are going on in the field of computers and maximum work in day to day life is performed by automatic software. So now a day’s youth should be well aware about machine language. He explained the functions of machine language in artificial intelligence and said that now driverless cars are running on the road which is the example of excellence of artificial intelligence. During the session Professor Raghavendra also cleared the doubts of participants by giving answers to their queries. All around 100 students and faculties were participated in the webinar. At the end Mr. Sanjay Ashatkar proposed the vote of thanks. The webinar was successfully conducted by Mr. Mahendra Ikhar from Dept. of Management Studies.

Condolence meeting for H.H. Baselios Marthoma Paulose II organized

An online Condolence meeting was organized by St. Thomas Mission in collaboration with MGM College Dimapur Nagaland at St. Thomas College Bhilai to give memorable tribute to heavenly abode Catholicos of East & Malankara Metropolitan Supreme head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church India, H.H. Baselios Marthoma Paulose II. On this occasion, the chief guest and speaker was Fr. Abraham Thomas Faculty, Old Theological Seminary Kottayam, Kerala & Secretary Dept. of Ecumenical Relations, MOSC.  H. G. Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius SST Metropolitan, Calcutta Diocese said that Marthoma Paulose always worked for social development and he motivated others also to serve the society. Chief Guest and speaker Fr. Abraham Thomas said that being a spiritual personality Marthoma Paulose II was a symbol of simple living high thinking motive. He always believed to serve the society as a whole. He was a dynamic and multitalented personality and these kinds of persons are very rare in today’s time. His visionary thoughts and beliefs will always motivate us. Administrator of College Rev. Father Dr. Joshi Varghese presented a short and brief introduction about the life of Baselios Marthoma Paulose by sharing a short documentary video. He said that H.H. Baselios Marthoma Paulose II sacrificed his whole life to service the society and poor people. Assistant Professor and Additional HOD of Dept. of Commerce Dr. Sheeja Varkey said that being a social activist Marthoma Paulose always worked for the betterment and development of economically weaker people of society. At last Principal of College Dr. M. G. Roymon proposed vote of thanks and presented his gratitude towards the chief guest Fr. Abraham Thomas. He also thanked to College Administrator and Manager Bishop for their continuous support and guidance. On this occasion the Principal of MGM College Dimapur Nagaland, Fr.Dr. P. S. Varghese and other staff members were also present. The program was conducted by Mr. Pratik Sharma Assistant Professor, Dept. of Commerce.

5 Day Workshop for Student Development

“Chhattisgarh is the most preferred place for entrepreneurship”

Bhilai : St. Thomas College, Bhilai’s Department of Economics
has organized a Five-Day virtual workshop for student development on “Entrepreneurial Ability, Opportunity and Personality Development” from 23rd April, 2021 to 27th April, 2021. Dr. Aruna Palta, Vice Chancellor of Hemchand Yadav University, Durg was the Chief Guest of this event. The guest speaker for Day 1 of this workshop was Dr. P. K Nimonkar, State Head of Chhattisgarh Industrial and Technical Consultancy (CITCON), Raipur.

The event was headed by Dr. Aparna Ghosh, Assistant Professor of the Department of Economics, under the guidance of Principal, Dr. M.G Roymon and Dr. Mariam Jacob, HOD of Dept. of Economics. Dr. M.G Roymon delivered a welcome speech at the beginning of this event. Bishop His Grace, Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius, Manager of St. Thomas College and Father Dr. Joshi Varghese, Administrator of the college, appreciated the workshop and greeted everyone. Dr. Aruna Palta gave a short speech after which Dr. Nimonkar began his presentation on the topic “Business and enterpreneurial opportunity in Chhattisgarh.”

Dr. Nimonkar brought the fact to light that Chhattisgarh is the most preferred place for entrepreneurship. He went on to highlight the reasons behind this. Chhattisgarh being the 9th largest state in India is only at the 17th position in terms of population. This shows that it has ample place available for development. Chhattisgarh also has good transportation system, robust telecom infrastructure and abundance of minerals and agricultural products. All of these make Chhattisgarh an ideal place for entrepreneurship. He spoke in great detail about the various agricultural products and industries that are flourishing in the state and also threw light on the Industrial Policies.

After the presentation, Dr. Nimonkar cleared the queries of the students. Dr. Mariam Jacob concluded the event by giving a Vote of Thanks to all the participants of the workshop. The guest speaker for the 2nd day of the workshop, Mr. Chandrahas Behar, Retd. IAS Officer, Raipur will speak about “Self Management”. Day 3’s guest speaker, Mr. Vivek Joglekar, Academic Director of Aadharshila Vidya Mandir, Bilaspur will speak on the topic “How to face an interview ?”. Day 4’s guest speaker, Mr. Kaustubh Dharmadhikary, Director and owner of KAPS Ice-cream, Raipur, will speak about “Pursuing enterpreneuship as a career”, and the special guest of the final day of the workshop, Dr. Prasant Shrivastava, Dean Student Welfare, Hemchand Yadav University, Durg will be speak on “Personality Development”.

Certificate Program “Professional Business Skills” started

The Department of Management Studies, St. Thomas College, Bhilai started two week certificate program on the title “’Professional Business Skills to develop the business skills in youth according to the changing scenario post Covid. The chief guest of today’s inaugural session was Dr. Aruna Palta, Honourbale Vice Chancellor, Hemchand Yadav Vishwavidyalaya, Durg. First of all Dr. Susan R. Abraham Head, Dept. of Management Studies, St. Thomas College gave a brief introduction about the certificate program and said that as per the industrial requirements, changes and expectations, well known and experienced speakers from industry are included in this program. Principal of College Dr. M. G. Roymon welcomed all the eminent guests and said that on Regular Intervals St. Thomas College organizes such programs for the betterment of students and we are dedicated towards the upliftment of students. Dr. Aruna Palta, Vice Chancellor, Hemchand Yadav Vishwavidyalaya, Durg appreciated the efforts taken by management department and said that this program will help students to develop their decision making, personality and will help them to mould their professional skills as per the industrial requirements. H. G. Manager Bishop Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius, Metropolitan Calcutta Diocese congratulated the department and said that due to this pandemic the situations are changed and this program will help students to develop their skills as per the changing requirements. Administrator of College, Rev. Father Dr. Joshi Varghese gave his best wishes and said that students will have to develop themselves according to the present professional requirements. The Speaker of today’s session was well known blogger, story teller, and motivational speaker Dr. Ajit Varwandkar.  He stressed on goal setting and said that today’s youth should select their career on the basis of changing industrial scenario. He said that now a days social media is very helpful for selection of career options. He cleared all the doubts of participants by giving answers to their questions. The program was conducted by Mahendra Ikhar, Asst. Prof. Dept. of Management Studies and Vote of thanks was proposed by BBA student Gurpeet Kaur.

सेंट थॉमस कॉलेज ने मृदा विश्लेषण पर ऑनलाइन प्रमाणपत्र कार्यक्रम का उद्घाटन किया

वनस्पति विज्ञान के स्नातकोत्तर विभाग ने “मृदा विश्लेषण” पर 15 दिवसीय ऑनलाइन प्रमाणपत्र कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया। यह प्रमाणपत्र कार्यक्रम छात्रों में मृदा विश्लेषण की बुनियादी समझ विकसित करने और मृदा परीक्षण के लिए आवश्यक कौशल को बढ़ाने और मृदा स्वास्थ्य के संबंध में रिपोर्ट तैयार करने पर जोर देता है। यह कार्यक्रम मृदा परीक्षण प्रयोगशालाओं में रोजगार के अवसर प्रदान करेगा और अपनी स्वयं की मृदा परीक्षण प्रयोगशाला स्थापित करने में भी मदद करेगा।

कार्यक्रम का उद्घाटन कॉलेज के अध्यक्ष हिज ग्रेस, डॉ जोसेफ मार डायोनिसियस ने किया। अपने उद्घाटन भाषण में हिज ग्रेस ने वर्तमान परिदृश्य में मृदा विश्लेषण के महत्व पर जोर दिया जब प्रदूषण मानव स्वास्थ्य पर भारी पड़ रहा है। हिज ग्रेस ने यह भी कहा कि मृदा विश्लेषण से कृषि पृष्ठभूमि वाले छात्रों को विभिन्न कृषि और गैर-कृषि उपयोगों के लिए भूमि की उपयुक्तता का आकलन करने में कौशल विकसित करने में मदद मिलेगी और साथ ही जैविक खेती की आवश्यकता पर जोर दिया।

सर्टिफिकेट प्रोग्राम की संयोजक और वनस्पति विज्ञान विभाग की प्रमुख डॉ. विनीता थॉमस उद्घाटन सत्र की वक्ता थीं। डॉ थॉमस ने मिट्टी के बुनियादी पहलुओं पर एक अद्भुत अंतर्दृष्टि दी और कहा कि मिट्टी सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कृषि संपत्तियों में से एक है जो फसलों को पानी और पोषक तत्वों का एक मूल्यवान भंडार प्रदान करती है। प्रत्येक प्रकार की मिट्टी के अपने गुण होते हैं जिन्हें बदला नहीं जा सकता, जैसे कि बनावट। उन्होंने इस बात पर भी जोर दिया कि मिट्टी की गुणवत्ता के प्रबंधन में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कारकों में से एक नियमित मिट्टी विश्लेषण है। इसके बाद प्रतिभागियों के साथ संवाद सत्र का आयोजन किया गया। कार्यक्रम का संचालन डॉ. ज्योति बख्शी, कार्यक्रम समन्वयक ने किया और कार्यक्रम के सह-समन्वयक डॉ. सुरुचि पारखी ने कार्यक्रम को सफलतापूर्वक आयोजित करने में सहायता की।

A Talk on Patent Filing

The P.G. Department of Chemistry of St. Thomas College organized a Webinar on Patent Filing. The Guest Speaker of the Webinar was Dr. Santosh Kumar Sar (Prof and Head, Department of Applied Chemistry, BIT, Durg.) Chief Patron H.G. Joseph Mar. Dionysius (Manager, Bishop), Patron Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese (Administrator)Dr. M.G. Roymon (Principal) , Dr. James Mathew, Head, Department of Chemistry(Convener), Dr.Chanda Verma, Additional Head, Department of Chemistry ( Organising Secretary) were present in the Webinar.

Dr. James Mathew (Convener) in his welcome address briefed the Members about the Patent filing in India. Dr. Chanda Verma (Co-convener) focused on the topic of the webinar, she also emphasised the students at home and outside to take full benefit out of this and come out with their interesting inventions. Dr. Santosh Sar the guest speaker first explained the meaningof patent, he came out with the copyrights of the inventions and at the same time he discussed the intellectual property act and knowledge about the patent filing of the product and creations of the mind and the need of it in the field of protection.Sir has discussed about the patent and also the operative system of it inIndia. Furtherwith the easy references of toys and Chocolates he clarified the way how to obtainthe patent .He finally requested the students and member to implement with new inventions and make this science field fertile with proper patent granting.At the outset, Patron Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese (Administrator)Dr. M.G. Roymon (Principal) mentioned their heartfelt thanks to the speaker and also appreciated the department for organising   talk on such  innovative topic.
