One of the founding Department of St Thomas College, the English Department is the cornerstone of the humanities. The Department of English was established in the year 1984.The Department offers B.A and M.A. (English) and Ph.D. (English) programmes. The faculty members have diverse areas of specialization. The Department caters to students of all backgrounds irrespective of the medium of instruction they have studied in school. The Department equally balances with Literature as well as the technical and functional use of the English Language, keeping in mind the job market. The Department has well established language laboratory to develop the communication skills of the students. The Department imparts NET/SET Guidance to students of UG and PG.

The association of the English Department “Language Forum” enables the students of the college to discover new perspectives and develop the Communication Skills like writing, thoughtful reading, and critical thinking, whether they choose to focus on literature, creative writing, Professional writing or English education. As a vibrant community of learners, we investigate how texts respond to and shape experience in and beyond the classroom. Various activities such as Word express ,Crossword puzzle ,Guest lecture ,Elocution competition ,Paper presentations, Debate , Movie review etc are conducted under the aegis of Language Forum .The Forum aims at providing recreational and consolidating opportunity for students to learn and practice English.
