Food Adulteration and Safety Regulation

A one day talk on Food Adulteration and Safety Regulation was organized by the Department of Chemistry, St. Thomas College, Bhilai on 12.04.2023. The Resource person of the programme was Mr. Domendra Dhruw food safety officer, Rajnandgaon. He talked on food adulteration, food safety, food testing and easy way of detecting adulterants in food product at home. He motivated the students sharing his own journey of becoming food officer to appear in various competitive exam. He assured his cooperation and shared his contact no. with the students. PG students of physics, chemistry, bio-tech, microbiology, botany and zoology along with their faculties attended the programme. The programme ended with a interactive session. Students satisfied their various queries. This program has been conducted by the inspiration of Rev.Fr.Dr.Joshi Varghese, Administrator St. Thomas College, Bhilai. Dr. M.G. Roymon, Principal of St Thomas College, Bhilai felicitated  speaker by giving a Mamento. Dr. Chanda Verma delivered the welcome speech,  Dr. Arvind Kumar Sahu introduced the speaker and Ms. Mohini Sharma delivered the vote of thanks and Mr. Anil Varghese assisted in organizing the program.

P G Department of Psychology Celebrates World Health Day

P.G Dept. of Psychology and IQAC  St. Thomas College, Bhilai celebrated World Health Day. For the event students conducted Physical health and hygiene awareness in the neighboring society and went to   slums of Ruabandha, Bhilai. The P.G students of the Department distributed Masks,sanitizers and soaps to the elderly and children. The young females of the slum area were distributed healthy sprouts and protein packets.

The students also talked with  the residents spreading information of Physical fitness, cleanliness, proper use of mask, sanitizers and mandatory use of soap before meals. Importance of vaccination for infants was also explained.

The awareness regarding dengue, malaria,AIDS were spread through slogans of and posters. The slogans consisted of keeping drains and window cooler clean and proper way of disposal of trash.

Administrator of the college, Rev Father Dr. Joshy Varghese appreciated the initiative and stressed that in today’s scenario one has to be conscious about his Physical as well as Mental Health. Principal Dr. M.G. Roymon said the IQAC has to conduct such awareness programs for Physical well Being and we at St. Thomas College are always seeking ways of doing so. Dr. Debjani Mukherjee Head, P.G dept. of psychology welcomed the gathering and said every student should be aware of his health and that the true success can be achieved only if one is Physically and Mentally Fit. Faculties Dr. Ankita Deshmukh, Dr. Sumita Singh and Mr. Tanmaya Pattnaik  encouraged the students for their initiative and hard work.

Veteran Nuclear Physicist Prof. Prakash Chandra Sood, a recipient of the Padma Shri award, interacted with students of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department

Veteran Nuclear Physicist Prof. Prakash Chandra Sood, a recipient of the Padma Shri award, interacted with students of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department of St. Thomas College, Bhilai. Prof. Sood had recently received the Padma Shri from the Honourable President Draupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for his prolonged service and contributions in the respective field of literature and education. The students of the Journalism Department had the opportunity to ask questions and learn from Prof. Sood’s exceptional knowledge and experience in his residence.
College Administrator Father Dr. Joshi Varghese and Principal Dr. M.G. Roymon extended his best wishes to the students for this special and rare interaction. On behalf of the college family, HOD Incharge Dr. Reema Dewangan gifted a sandalwood plant to Dr. Sood and Mrs. Usha Sood and draped them with a shawl as a mark of respect.
Assistant Professor and Journalist Md. Zakir Hussian gave a brief introduction of the remarkable life of Prof. Sood. At 94 years of age and after 70 years of teaching nuclear physics, Prof. Sood still continues to have the spirit of teaching as he eagerly answered the questions of the students. On the key question asked by the students regarding the possible impact of nuclear energy on climate change, Prof. Sood said that “No fossil materials are used in the production of nuclear energy and its production also does not emit green house gases, as such there is no need to be concerned of climate change due to nuclear energy.” He recalled that prior to independence, even reference books of nuclear physics were rare in the country and the guidance of his teachers when he incidentally applied for the American Fellowship and pursued his further education abroad. Prof. Sood also told the students about the many personalities he was associated with, Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam and Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. He also narrated the story behind setting up India’s first computer lab during 1978-80 while he was the head of the Physics Department at BHU. He said that today our country is self-sufficient in the field of atomic energy because efforts were started for this since the country’s independence. During this conversation, Prof. Sood’s son-in-law and retired CGM from SAIL Corporate Office, New Delhi, Rakesh Kumar also shared his experiences of the warm reception their family received during the Padma Shri Award ceremony.
Towards the end, Assistant Professor Amitabh Sharma expressed his gratitude to Prof. Sood. In making this interaction successful, Assistant Professor Chhavi Kiran Sahu, President of Media Manch Yashraj Yadav along with Aditya S Kumar, Kanishk Mishra, Kiran Mai Jadav, Shrishti Dubey, Sengel Tirkey, Alwin P. Sunil and Pranjal Tiwari made special contributions.

Department of Chemistry organized a ESSAY COMPETITION to mark “WORLD WATER DAY”

The Department of Chemistry, St. Thomas College, Bhilai and IQAC has organized a EASSY COMPETITION to mark “WORLD WATER DAY” on  22 March 2023. The theme of Eassy competition is Accelerating the Change to Solve the water and sanitation crisis. The PG students participated in the eassy competition and they wrote different types of eassy on the basis of the theme. They also learnt how we change our environment and solve the water problems.  HOD Dr. James Matew and Dr. Chanda verma appreciated the eassys. The 1st prize went to Harshita yadav of M.Sc. 4th Sem. Chemistry and 2nd prize was won by  Aanchal Kannoje M.Sc. 4th Sem. Chemistry and third went to of M.Sc. 4th Sem. Chemistry.

Valedictory Session of Certificate Programme on Research Methodology

The PG. Department of Commerce of St. Thomas College Bhilai in association with the MoU Partner K.K Modi University Durg has collaboratively organised a Certificate course on Research Methodology from February 20th, 2023 to 6th March, 2023.The Valedictory Session of the fifteen day certificate program was held at KK. Modi University Durg on 6th March, 2023. Hon Vice Chancellor of Hemchand Yadav Vishvavidalata Durg . Dr. Aruna Palta Was the Chief guest on the occasion. Madam congratulated both the institutions for the conduct of the certificate program and said that research methodology is an important aspect in today’s scenario even the new education policy has given importance to this topic. Madam further urged the students to take research work seriously and to come with good publications. Vice chancellor In charge of KK. Modi University Dr. Monika Sethi Sharma in her Presidential address encouraged the students to come with research in various fields. The Principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon and the Administrator of the College Rev. Father . Dr. Joshi Varghese appreciated the PG. Department of commerce for this collaborative work. Dr. Mhd. Bakhtawar Ahmed Asst. Prof Department of Computer Science of KK Modi University welcome the gathering Dr. Sapna Sharma Convenor of the program and Head PG. Department of Commerce of St. Thomas College Bhilai gave a brief report of the fifteen Days program, she also thanked the officials of the KK Modi University for their guidance and support. Convenor from KK Modi University Mr. Vikram proposed the Vote Of thanks. Hon V. C Madam gave away the certificates and prizes to the winning teams. The last day of the program had presentation competition. The winning team got a cash prize of Rs. 1,000 and the runners up got Rs. 500.Mr. Bijoy Kujur,Ms. Nishtha Jain, Mr. Ajo Thomas and Mr. Abish C Thomas were the winners and Ms. Mili Mathew, Ms. Laxmi Patel,Ms. Anna Shalom and Sonali Thakur begged the second position. Ms. Sakshi Prajapati and Ms. Kirandeep kaur Chahal of KK Modi University conducted the program and coordinated in making the program a success. Students opined that the program was fruitful for them Mr. Ajoy Thomas of MA. Economics and Anna Shalom of M. Com gave their feedback, Dr. Sheeja Varkey Asst. Prof and Addl Head of department of commerce and Dr. Kiranbala Das Asst. Prof Department of Economics also gave their feedback and said that the analytical part can be taken later on in research methodology programs to come. Guest lecture on natural farming

The P.G. Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology of St. Thomas College organized a a guest lecture on “Farmlab- On Farm natural fertilizers development by Farmers” in association with MoU Partner Farmlabs, Pune. The objective of this webinar was to make students providing knowledge of organic farming and preparation of Biofertilizer.

Dr. Santosh Chavan, Director, Farmlab Laboratory, Pune was delivered a seminar on Bio-organic preparations.

He told in his seminar that chemical fertilizers are toxic to environment and health. In his talk he gave a good knowledge about different methods for production of Natural fertilizers. He also discussed the journey of farmer field from last 5 years. He told his experiences regarding preparation of biofertilizers from starting till date. In the seminar Dr. Santosh thanked to government for providing financial assistance and support for Bio-organic preparations.

The principal Dr. M.G. Roymon congratulated all staff members and said that the St. Thomas College regularly organized this type of programme for beneficial to students.

This event was supervised by Dr. V. Shanthi, Dr. Ujjwala Supe, Dr. Shubha Diwan, Mrs. Ekta Saxena Dr. Anubhuti Jha and Ms. Sulagana Ghosh Barman, Faculties of Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

Food Fest

Department of Sociology and Department of Education jointly organised Food Fest to mark International Day of Families. Students from different streams of the college enthusiastically participated with their family members in the Food Fest. Food Stalls of variety of taste and nutritional value were prepared and sold by the students. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Usha Kiran, Principal of Girls College, Raipur.

The principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon, appreciated the staff and students of both the organising departments for arranging such a mega event. Administrator of the college Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese, IQAC coordinator Dr. Debjani Mukherjee extended their moral support. Chief Guest of Food Fest, Dr Usha Kiran, motivated and congratulated the Heads of both the Departments, the Convenors and the Students, for initiating such event and developing team spirit among students. She also appreciated students’ sense of earning with hard work and creating a sense of self respect and dignity of labour. The entire program was guided and supported by Ms. Deepti Santosh, Head In- Charge of Department of Sociology and Dr. Sheeja Thomas, Head of Department of Education along with Convenor of the event Mr. Kanhaiya Pandey and Dr. Hari Prakash Sonwani and Co convenors Dr. Shabnam Khan, Mr. Chandan Dekate, Mr. Santosh Yadav, Dr. Jyotsna Gadpayle and Dr. Anupama Gangrade.

The event turned out to be a Mega hit due to the tedious effort of all the Student Coordinators namely Sanchana Sahu, Anupam Rosy Minj, Daniel P.U, Anwit Lakra, Yogesh Soni, Khushbu Patnayak, Duleshwar Verma, Rohan Kumar Soni, Sheryil P. Anil and Ditipriya Rana. Prizes were distributed to the winners of food fest for different categories. Shubham. P, Chandrakant Markam, Deepanjali Dhruw and Jahnavi Mishra Won prize for the most popular dish by voting, Gurmeet singh won first runner up for most popular dish by voting.Vibha Deshmukh, Aparna Sahu and Vanee Dewangan won prize for Best Crunchy Munchy Snacks, Anisha Sahu, Megha Pisda and Honey Yadav for Best Street Food, Palak Agrawal, Anuj for Best in Cleanliness and Hygiene, Naveen S Daniel, Shubhang Das, Astha Ramteke and Alex Rohan for Best Presentation, Bhaskar Sahu, Aashish Kumar and Vishva Mohan Singh for Best in Taste, Tejas Patel, Ashish Patel and Sakshee Sahu for Best Healthy food and Geshu Jaiswal and Nidhi Gupta won prize for Best Easy to Cook.
